Description

Enjoy baking soft, fluffy, and tender homemade Dinner Rolls using simple plant-based ingredients. These versatile rolls are perfect for any meal, featuring a quick-rising dough and customizable flavors like herbs, garlic, or sweetness. Warm, golden, and melt-in-your-mouth, they complement soups, stews, sandwiches, or a cozy snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm plant-based milk (about 110°F / 43°C)
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 2 tablespoons agave syrup (natural)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural)
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon natural gelling agent

Optional Variations

  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped rosemary, thyme, or chives (herb infusion)
  • Garlic butter (plant-based) for brushing
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon and 1 tablespoon brown sugar (for sweet cinnamon rolls)
  • Sesame, poppy, or sunflower seeds for topping
  • ½ cup shredded plant-based cheese (plant-based) for cheesy twist

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: Warm the plant-based milk until lukewarm (about 110°F / 43°C). Stir in the active dry yeast and agave syrup (natural). Let sit for 5-10 minutes until bubbly and foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, salt, and natural gelling agent thoroughly to distribute ingredients evenly.
  3. Combine wet and dry: Pour the yeast mixture into the dry ingredients. Add olive oil and vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural). Stir until a soft dough forms, then turn dough onto a floured surface.
  4. Knead to perfection: Knead the dough for 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth, elastic, and slightly sticky to develop gluten for a fluffy texture.
  5. First rise: Place kneaded dough in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with a clean cloth and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, until doubled in size.
  6. Shape the rolls: Punch down the dough and divide into equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball. Arrange closely in a greased baking dish to promote soft sides.
  7. Second rise: Cover shaped rolls with a cloth and let them rise again for 30-40 minutes until puffy and nearly doubled.
  8. Bake to golden perfection: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake rolls for 15-18 minutes until tops are golden brown. Remove and brush warm rolls with olive oil or plant-based butter (plant-based).

Notes

  • Use warm liquids around 110°F (43°C) to properly activate yeast without killing it.
  • Thorough kneading ensures airier, fluffier rolls.
  • Cover dough with a damp towel instead of plastic to prevent drying.
  • Arrange dough balls tightly for soft edges instead of crusty sides.
  • Brush rolls with olive oil or melted plant-based butter (plant-based) before serving for shine and softness.
