Ingredients

Scale

Churro Dough

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free mix)
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Cinnamon Sugar Coating

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon (natural flavoring)

Plant-Based Dipping Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons plant-based butter (plant-based)
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate (plant-based), chopped
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup (natural flavoring)
  • A pinch of natural gelling agent

For Frying

  • Vegetable oil, for deep frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Boil water with vegetable oil and salt in a medium saucepan. Once boiling, add all the flour at once and stir vigorously with a wooden spoon until the dough forms a smooth ball that pulls away from the sides.
  2. Pipe the Churros: Allow the dough to cool slightly, then transfer to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip. Pipe 4 to 6 inch long strips onto parchment paper, making sure they do not touch.
  3. Heat the Oil: In a deep pan, heat vegetable oil over medium heat to 180°C (350°F). Test by dropping a small piece of dough; it should sizzle and rise immediately.
  4. Fry the Churros: Carefully place churros in the hot oil in small batches. Fry for 2 to 3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  5. Coat with Cinnamon Sugar: While warm, toss the churros in a mixture of granulated sugar and cinnamon until fully coated.
  6. Make the Plant-Based Dipping Sauce: In a small saucepan, melt plant-based butter with dark chocolate over low heat. Stir in maple syrup and a pinch of natural gelling agent until thickened. Serve warm alongside churros.

Notes

  • Keep oil temperature steady at 180°C for even cooking and perfect crunch.
  • Fry churros in small batches to avoid overcrowding and sogginess.
  • Pipe churros evenly for uniform cooking and attractive presentation.
  • Serve churros immediately for best texture and flavor.
  • Use fresh cinnamon and quality plant-based chocolate for optimal taste.
