Description

Naan Bread is a soft, fluffy, and tender flatbread perfect for scooping, wrapping, or layering. Made with plant-based ingredients, this versatile bread enhances any meal from spicy stews to fresh salads. Ready in under an hour, it features simple pantry staples, customizable flavors, and a delightful golden color with a slightly charred finish.

Ingredients

Scale

Basic Dough Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm water (comfortably warm to the touch)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt (plant-based)

Optional Flavor Enhancers

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced (optional)
  • 2 tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped (optional)
  • Grated plant-based cheese (plant-based) for topping (optional)
  • Crushed red pepper flakes or finely chopped jalapeños (optional for spice)
  • Mashed spiced potatoes or chopped mushrooms for stuffing (optional)
  • Plant-based butter (natural) for brushing

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: Combine warm water and sugar in a bowl, sprinkle the active dry yeast on top. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until foamy and bubbling, indicating the yeast is active and ready.
  2. Mix the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the activated yeast mixture along with plant-based yogurt and vegetable oil. Stir until a shaggy dough forms, then knead for about 8 to 10 minutes until soft and elastic.
  3. Let the Dough Rise: Place the dough ball in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  4. Shape the Naan: Punch down the risen dough and divide it into equal portions. Roll each piece into an oval or teardrop shape on a floured surface.
  5. Cook the Naan: Heat a heavy skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat. Cook each piece for 1-2 minutes on one side until bubbly and golden, then flip and cook the other side until cooked through and slightly charred.
  6. Add Flavor and Serve: Brush warm naan with melted plant-based butter (natural) mixed with minced garlic and chopped cilantro if desired. Serve immediately for best taste and texture.

Notes

  • Use warm, not hot water to activate the yeast to avoid killing it.
  • Allow the dough enough rising time to achieve fluffy naan.
  • Roll the dough evenly to ensure consistent cooking.
  • Cook on high heat to get characteristic charred spots and bubbles.
  • Cover the pan briefly while cooking if needed to trap steam and help the dough puff up.
